How Indocid Kill Rats And Why It Doesn't Kill Humans

Indomethacin, popularly known as Indocid or indocide is a medicine commonly used as a rodenticide to kill rats in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. It is an effective over-the-counter drug used as a poison to control rat infestations in homes. The Indocid capsule is opened, and its powder is usually mixed with bread, meat, fish, or any kind of food attractive to rats, and placed in strategic places at home. If a rat eats this, it dies.

So Why Is It Not Harmful To Humans?

Indomethacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used by humans. In fact, the drug was actually made to help treat some illnesses in humans. It is an analgesic made for the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammation caused by swelling, arthritis, gout, spondilitis, and other likewise illnesses. As you can see, it is not harmful to humans because it was made to treat human illnesses.

However, in recent years, the drug has become less used, making it easily available and cheap, making it a nemesis for rats and other rodents.

How Then Does It Kill Rats?

When mixed with food as bait and eaten by rats, it dies from internal bleeding.

Vitamin K is a major component in blood clotting, and often, it is produced in the intestinal tract of a rat. So when it consumes the food laced with Indocid, it stops the production of vitamin K in the intestinal tract, causing trauma to the blood vessel walls, which begins to damage, resulting in internal bleeding. Because the rat can no longer produce vitamin K to clot the blood, it dies from it after becoming dehydrated and weak.
All of these typically take between 1 and 4 days for the rat to die.

However, sometimes a rat can consume Indocid and not die.

Why Some Rats Don't Die After Eating Indocid Poisoned Food

Well, there may be chances that a rat may not die even after eating Indocid poisoned food. This can happen if a rat eats foods very rich in vitamin K after taking the Indocid. The highly rich vitamin K food will help stop the rodent from bleeding internally.
