Most Common Animals Found In Nigeria
When you live in Nigeria or visit Nigeria for the first time, these animals are the ones you can't miss. Be it in villages, towns, or cities, you will often come across these animals. They are so common that they practically live with us, either as pets, pests, or for consumption. ListCube has listed these animals popularly found in Nigeria.
1. Dog: The local Nigerian dog is widely known as ‘ekuke'. Some people mistake them for basenji, but they are not. Basenjis can't bark. Unlike popular dog breeds like the Alsatian, golden retriever, or bulldog, the local Nigerian dog is an unclassified breed of dog commonly found in Africa and some parts of Asia. They are unclassified because they cannot be traced to originate from a particular breed but rather are a mixture of many breeds from over the years. They are often seen everywhere. While they may not make good security dogs, they are quite okay for hunting, as pets, or as meat for those who eat dogs. One good thing about these dogs is their high disease resistance levels.
2. Agama Lizard: The Agama lizard is a species of lizard found in West Africa. They have a penchant for living in cracks in walls or around humans, and they can also be seen in bushes. They are so popular, you can't miss them.
3. Rat: Okay, these guys need no introduction. Whether house rats or those in the gutters, they are everywhere. The house rats, particularly, are terrorists. I believe there is no place you won’t find them. Homes, offices, places of worship, hotels, restaurants, and even the Presidential Villa, where the president resides, you will find them there.
4. Dove: The laughing dove is a type of bird from the dove family. They are the most common birds found in Nigeria and are sometimes kept as pets. The males make a unique cooing sound often mimicked as "odiricuckoo" but the sound is actually like "coo-coo coo ru".
5. Goat: Whether the Nigerian dwarf goat or the Red Sokoto, goats are popularly reared for meat here, hence their popularity within communities, so much so that you find goats roaming the city centres.
6. Chicken: Plymouth Rock chicken, Cochin chicken, Orpington chicken, Rhode Island Red chicken, Leghorn chicken, Malay chicken, or even our Nigerian Indigenous Chicken (NIC)—they are in every nook and cranny of Nigeria. They are a popular meat choice around, especially during special merry-making events. The NIC breeds of Forest Savannah ecotypes and Fulani ecotypes are said to be tastier and have stronger bones to crack, but they are not as meaty as the other breeds.
7. Cattle: Rearing cattle is a cultural trait amongst the Fulani tribe of Nigeria, who often move around from place to place, catering for their cattle. It is not uncommon to find cattle roaming about in the bushes, on the roads, or just in your backyard.
Bonus: Mosquito and Housefly.
